NATM Certification

The National Trailer Manufacturers Compliance Program

The Association is organized to promote, both to the industry and to the public, a universal recognition of safety and quality in the trailer manufacturing industry. Since its inception, NATM has worked to improve the trailer industry through the compliance and promotion of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Our trailers have been specifically designed to transport Forno Bravo Wood-Fired Ovens. Through engineering calculations, testing, choice of materials, and specific manufacturing processes these trailers are in compliance with NATM requirements and exceed industry standards. By being in compliance with NATM guidelines they are granted the U.S. DOT’s Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) certification.

NATM members voluntarily participating in the Compliance Program have passed a consultation assessing whether they are building quality trailers with manufacturing processes designed to meet federal regulations and Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards covering certification labels, tires & wheels, brakes, lighting, reflectors & conspicuity, under ride protection, Early Warning Reporting, tire placarding information, and cargo securement. In addition, the consultation examines whether the trailer manufacturing process in place can meet industry accepted manufacturing standards and practices covering safety chains, couplers, electrical components, warning labels and consumer information.

Building My Own

“I can build my own, why should I buy one from someone else?”

As we’ve seen in the past few years people have grossly underestimated what it takes to build a portable pizza oven. Below is an unfortunate attempt at modifying a cargo trailer to carry a wood-fired oven. When you put anything, pizza oven included, on a trailer you need to definitely understand that this is a motor vehicle it and it has to perform and operate safely under the same conditions and standards as a car or truck.

3 Reasons it’s not such a good idea.

1.       Health department – many health departments will not license a oven that you have built yourself as they have not been built to follow any code or guidelines.
2.       Insurance – an insurance company is less likely to cover you from a liability standpoint for both the trailer as a piece of equipment and your business as an organization if your trailer was built my you.
3.       Liability – if you have an issue with the trailer or oven from a structural problem and built it yourself, you have no recourse in getting any resolution to your issue.  If your trailer has problems Maxey will be there to assist as will The Fire Within for any problems with the oven.
4.        Investment -when you build your own portable oven you take the capital investment into your own hands. Your entire business is at jeopardy as loss or damages to your primary piece of equipment means you’re out of business.
Calculating towing dynamics is only one part of building a safe towing trailer. When using cargo trailers with little or no oversight, no knowledge of safety considerations and regulations to follow you end up exposing you and others to high physical and financial risks.
NATM standards require that we calculate and design every custom trailer to transport its intended cargo. We build every portable pizza straight from engineering, we weight each and every part, oven from raw materials. We exceed the Federal highway safety standards, meeting them is not enough. Our trailers proudly display the NATM logo after being designed and tested to carry portable brick pizza ovens.
When working with us you’ll find that no one knows and gives safety information like we do.

Exceeding Safety Standards

Wood fired pizza is above far above average, so should the equipment

The Fire Within Portable Brick Ovens Exceed Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. As our products evolve we continue to put safety first. All of our trailers are in compliance with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. To verify conformity to FMVSS every NATM trailer manufacture is inspected on a Bi-Annual basis. This compliance includes that every trailer is engineered, not just shop built, and incorporates crash avoidance technology and equipment.

This engineering process includes:

  • That the Gross Weight Ratio is calculated and applied to the engineered design. This ensures that the weight of the trailer and it’s cargo are properly supported, distributed and balanced to drive and maneuver at highways speeds. This has a direct effect on steering control in the event of an emergency or a blown tire.
  • That both hydraulic and Electric Brake Systems are installed
  • This standard specifies requirements for vehicles equipped with hydraulic and electric service brake systems to ensure safe braking performance under normal conditions and emergency conditions.
  • The industries latest in new products including suspensions are used in construction.
  • Proper lighting devices are installed.
  • Appropriate tire and rim selection per cargo and usage.
